  • Follow the employer’s instructions for length, attachments, and submission.

For a separate document, use a readable font and leave a blank line between paragraphs. Our cover letter format guide explains the layout in more detail.

How to Write a New Grad Nurse Cover Letter

Start with the job posting. Identify the role, required qualifications, and one or two responsibilities your training prepares you for. Then use the five steps below to explain that connection.

The wording examples are fictional. Adapt them to your actual qualifications and experiences.

1. Add Your Contact Details and Greeting

For a separate letter, include your name, phone number, email, city, and the date. Add the employer’s details if the application requires them. Keep your contact information consistent with your resume.

Address the hiring manager by name when you know it. Otherwise, “Dear Nurse Recruitment Team” or “Dear Hiring Manager” is a clear, professional greeting.

2. Name the Role and State Your Qualifications

Name the exact position or residency program. Mention your nursing degree and graduation date, then accurately state your license or exam status when relevant.

I am applying for the New Graduate RN position at [Hospital Name]. I earned my BSN from [College Name] in [Month, Year] and hold an active [State] RN license.

License pending or NCLEX coming up?

These examples use US terminology. Choose wording that matches your current status and check the program’s eligibility requirements.

Passed NCLEX; license still pending

I completed my BSN at [College Name] in [Month, Year] and passed the NCLEX-RN in [Month, Year]. My application for [State] RN licensure is pending.

NCLEX scheduled

I completed my BSN at [College Name] in [Month, Year] and am scheduled to take the NCLEX-RN on [Date].

If your exam is not scheduled, say that you are preparing for it. Include only credentials you currently hold. For applications outside the US, use the relevant local registration terminology.

3. Describe Relevant Clinical Experience

Choose one rotation, preceptorship, or other relevant experience. Explain what you did, who supervised you, and how it relates to the advertised role. You do not need an impressive statistic to make the experience useful.

Job requirement: Clear patient communication.

Supporting experience: During a clinical rotation, you helped patients prepare questions for their nurse.

During my medical-surgical rotation, I helped patients identify questions about their discharge information and shared those questions with my supervising nurse. This taught me to listen carefully and recognize when a patient needed further explanation.

Choose accurate words such as assisted, documented, reported, or supported. Our guide to action verbs for describing your experience can help you name your contribution clearly.

4. Explain Why You Want This Role or Residency

Mention something specific from the employer’s website or job posting: the patient population, clinical setting, mentorship, or training structure. Explain why that feature matters to you.

Your residency’s scheduled preceptor feedback appeals to me because discussing my clinical decisions helped me learn during my final placement. I would value that guidance as I develop my assessment and prioritization skills.

Use this example only if the program offers that feature. Replace general praise with a verified detail.

5. Close with a Clear, Professional Ending

Thank the reader and express interest in discussing the role. Mention attached documents only when you are actually attaching them. Finish with “Sincerely” or “Best regards” and your name.

Thank you for considering my application. My resume is attached, and I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my clinical training aligns with your graduate nursing position.

Before sending, check the hospital name, position title, credentials, and every placeholder. Read the letter aloud and shorten any sentence that is difficult to follow.

Skills and Keywords for a New Grad Nurse Cover Letter

Choose a few skills that appear in the job posting and match your training. Then show how you used them. One clear example can demonstrate communication, teamwork, and patient care together.

The examples below are fictional starting points. Use only wording you can support with your own experience.

Our healthcare resume keywords guide offers more role-specific terms. Use relevant language naturally; repeating keywords does not guarantee an interview or an ATS result.

New Grad Nurse Cover Letter Mistakes to Avoid

Check these six points before sending your letter. Each correction helps you keep the application specific, accurate, and easy to read.

  1. 1. Sending the Same Letter to Every Hospital

Mistake: Changing only the hospital name while keeping general statements about your passion for nursing.

Better approach: Name the exact role and connect a relevant clinical experience to a specific feature of the unit or residency.

  2. 2. Repeating Your Resume

Mistake: Listing every rotation, course, and certification without explaining their relevance.

Better approach: Develop one useful example. Explain your contribution, what you learned, and how it prepares you for the role.

  3. 3. Overstating Your Clinical Responsibilities

Mistake: Describing supervised training as independent practice or claiming you performed a procedure you only observed.

Better approach: Clearly distinguish what you observed, assisted with, and practiced under supervision.

  4. 4. Giving Inaccurate Credential Details

Mistake: Claiming an active license while it is pending or describing an expired certification as current.

Better approach: Verify your degree, license, exam status, and certifications. State your current qualifications and check the program’s eligibility requirements.

  5. 5. Copying Achievements You Cannot Support

Mistake: Keeping sample numbers, software names, or clinical achievements that do not match your experience.

Better approach: Use facts you can explain in an interview. A clear description is useful without a statistic. Leave out identifying patient information.

  6. 6. Ignoring Application Instructions

Mistake: Using the wrong submission method, exceeding a word limit, or forgetting an attachment.

Better approach: Follow the requested format, length, and submission process. Check attachments and replace every placeholder before sending.

New Grad Nurse Cover Letter FAQs

How do I write a new grad nurse cover letter without paid experience?

Use your nursing education, clinical rotations, preceptorship, or relevant volunteer experience. Describe one task you performed, the supervision involved, and what it taught you about the role. For broader guidance, see our cover letter examples with no experience.

Should I mention clinical rotations in my nursing cover letter?

Yes, when they support your application. Choose a rotation relevant to the unit or patient population and explain your contribution. Name it as clinical training and distinguish what you observed from what you practiced under supervision.

What should I include in a nurse residency cover letter?

Include the program and cohort, your degree and graduation date, your current license or exam status, and one relevant clinical example. Explain your interest in a specific feature of the residency and the skills you want to develop. Follow the program’s application instructions.

How do I mention my NCLEX or nursing license status?

State your actual status clearly. For a US application, specify whether you hold an active state RN license, have passed the NCLEX-RN with licensure pending, or have an exam scheduled. Include dates when relevant. Outside the US, use the appropriate local registration terminology.

How long should a new grad nurse cover letter be?

Aim for one page with three or four short paragraphs unless the employer specifies a different length. Include your qualifications, a relevant experience, your reason for applying, and a brief closing. Follow any word limit given for an application form or personal statement.

Do I need a cover letter if the application says it is optional?

An optional cover letter is not required. Consider including one if it adds useful context, such as your interest in the specialty or a clinical experience your resume only mentions briefly. Follow the employer’s instructions and avoid submitting a generic letter that adds little information.

What if I have no clinical placement in my preferred specialty?

Use relevant experience from another setting, such as patient communication, documentation, or teamwork. Explain your interest in the specialty and what you hope to learn. Be clear about your actual exposure rather than claiming specialist experience you do not have.

Should I attach my cover letter or put it in the application email?

Follow the employer’s instructions. If a separate letter is requested, attach it in the required format and keep the email brief. If the email body is meant to serve as your cover letter, include a concise version there. Mention only the documents you actually attach.
