Put your expected graduation date in your resume’s Education section, beside or directly below your degree. Add Expected before the date to show that the degree hasn’t been awarded yet. Here’s a bachelor’s entry you can adapt:
[University Name], [City, State]
Bachelor of Science in [Major]
Expected May 2027
Place Education near the top if you’re a student with little relevant work experience. If your work history makes a stronger case for the job, put it first and Education below it.
Choose the date your university will record
Use Expected Month Year, the format recommended by Florida Gulf Coast University’s career services. Choose the official award month confirmed by your institution. Arizona State University’s registrar defines this conferral date as the date on the transcript when the degree was officially recognized.
The ceremony may happen at another time. Boston University’s School of Public Health, for example, invites January graduates and students expecting to graduate in May or August to its May ceremony.
If you’ve finished coursework while the degree award is pending, you can show both:
[University Name], [City, State]
Bachelor of Science in [Major]
Degree conferral expected January 2027
Coursework completed December 2026
The coursework line is optional. It doesn’t mean that a thesis, final examination, or other outstanding requirement has been completed.

Once the university confirms the award, remove “expected.” You don’t need to wait for the physical diploma. If an employer needs evidence before your transcript updates, ask the registrar what confirmation it can provide.
When you don’t have a firm graduation date
Bring your remaining courses, prerequisites, and any thesis or placement requirements to that conversation. For instance, if a required laboratory course is offered only in spring, reaching your credit total in December may not mean you can graduate then. Use your degree audit and planned course load to identify the earliest realistic completion term.
“And if you’re not sure when you’re going to complete your degree, schedule a consultation with a student advisor at your university.” — Frank Hackett, Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW)
If you reasonably expect to finish in 2028 but can’t establish the month, Expected 2028 is a temporary estimate. If you’re enrolled but cannot establish a reliable year, use “in progress”:
[University Name], [City, State]
Bachelor of Science in [Major]
In progress
If you’ve left the program and have no plan to return, describe the relevant study as coursework: Coursework toward a B.A. in English, 2023–2025; degree not completed.

If your completion plan changes
Update the expected graduation date on your resume and application profiles. During an interview process, tell the recruiter when the change affects a degree requirement, your eligibility, or your proposed start date. You can explain the practical effect without putting personal circumstances on the resume.
For example: “My expected graduation has moved from May to December 2027. Could you confirm whether that fits the role’s degree requirement?”
“Check your expected graduation date at the end of every semester to ensure the timeline is still accurate.” — Andrew Stoner, executive resume writer and career coach
Education examples for different situations
Use your institution’s actual degree title and current major. If you haven’t declared a major, “Bachelor of Arts, major undeclared” is more accurate than naming a subject you might study. Replace the bracketed details and illustrative dates below with your own.
For an internship or first job, you can add a relevant course or completed project beneath an education entry. Choose something that supports a skill in the job description. A substantial project may deserve its own Projects section if you need room to describe your contribution.
Associate-degree student
[Community College Name], [City, State]
Associate of Applied Science in Accounting
Expected December 2027
If you plan to transfer, list your current associate program until you begin the bachelor’s program.
Master’s student with a completed bachelor’s degree
[Graduate University Name], [City, State]
Master of Science in Data Science — Expected May 2028
[Undergraduate University Name], [City, State]
Bachelor of Science in Mathematics — May 2025
List the current master’s program first, followed by the completed bachelor’s degree.
High-school student
[High School Name], [City, State]
High School Diploma — Expected June 2027
Working student studying part-time
[University Name], [City, State]
Bachelor of Business Administration, part-time
Expected December 2028
The part-time label is optional; it can explain your study schedule. Give your work availability separately if the employer asks.
Two degrees with different completion dates
[University Name], [City, State]
Master of Public Health — Expected May 2029
Master of Social Work — Expected May 2028
Give each degree its own date if your program awards them separately.
Student who has transferred to a new college
[Current University Name], [City, State]
Bachelor of Science in Psychology — Expected May 2028
[Previous College Name], [City, State]
Undergraduate coursework in Psychology
Attended August 2024–May 2026; transferred
The University of Pennsylvania’s career service recommends that incoming transfer students include their previous institution while building a record at the new school. Relevant activities or strong grades can make the earlier entry worth retaining afterward.
If you earned an associate degree there, replace the coursework line with that qualification and its award date.
One degree with two majors
[University Name], [City, State]
Bachelor of Arts, Double Major: Economics and Spanish
Expected May 2027
UConn’s career guidance distinguishes double majors within one degree from programs awarding two separate degrees.
A relevant minor or concentration can go on a separate line beneath the degree, such as Minor in Data Analytics. It doesn’t need a second graduation date when it’s part of the same award.

Graduate certificate in progress
[University Name], [City, State]
Graduate Certificate in Data Analytics
Expected completion August 2027
A university certificate can sit in Education. Harvard Business School Online also identifies Professional Development as an option for shorter courses.
Doctoral student who has advanced to candidacy
[University Name], [City, State]
Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry — Expected May 2029
Doctoral candidate
Include “doctoral candidate” only after your program formally grants that status; Stanford’s policy distinguishes this milestone from admission to a doctoral program.
Completing an online application
After uploading your resume, check that the imported education fields show the correct school, qualification, and date.
If a transfer student’s attendance at the current university began in August 2026, that is the start date for that school’s record. Enter the earlier college separately if the form requests it.
Follow the form’s instructions for attendance dates and expected completion. If it requires a day you don’t know, check your academic calendar or ask the recruiter how to enter an estimate.
If you’re asked whether you’ve already earned the degree, select “no” if the award is still pending. Contact the employer if the form offers no suitable option for current study.
Before you send it
A clear expected graduation date on your resume helps an employer see how your studies fit the role’s timeline. With that detail settled, focus the rest of your resume on the skills and experience you can bring to the job.
FAQ
Do I need to include my GPA?
Include it if the employer asks, or if it adds useful evidence for the role. Follow any stated cutoff or reporting instructions. Wording such as Cumulative GPA: 3.6/4.0 identifies both the figure and its scale. If an application requests your cumulative GPA, don’t substitute a higher major GPA.
Can I apply before I graduate?
Check when the employer requires the degree: when you apply or by your start date. For internships, also check any stated graduation window. Ask the recruiter if the requirements are unclear.
Suppose your expected award is May 2027. A job starting in July 2027 with “degree completed by the start date” leaves time to finish. An internship restricted to December 2027–June 2028 graduates would exclude that same timeline.
What if I’ve been accepted into a program but haven’t started?
If the accepted place is relevant, explain it in a cover letter with the planned start date. Admission alone doesn’t establish that you’re currently pursuing the degree.
Can I leave the date off an older, completed degree?
You can often omit it when your relevant work history is more useful to the reader. Provide dates on an application form if requested, even when you leave them off the resume.
